On November 23rd, 2022, the two-year project „Renovation and conversion of the stone barn of Hessen Castle (district of Harz) into a cultural barn and multimedia experience centre“ came to a worthy conclusion. The „Schloss Hessen“ support association was awarded first prize in the category „Exploiting the opportunities of digitalisation“ by the Ministry for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs. In the project, a lost work of garden art – the „Fuerstlich Braunschweigischer Garten zu Hessem“ – which was created during the heyday of the castle in the 16th to 17th centuries, was brought back into the consciousness of the present and preserved for future generations by means of multimedia representation and a meticulously created 3D reconstruction.
The 3D reconstruction is presented using an immersive projection system, for which we designed, manufactured and installed a 7m wide and 3.5m high cylindrical projection screen together with a floor projection and a projector rig for 6-channel projection. For high-resolution projection, 3D-capable WQXGA DLP laser phosphor projectors are used, combined with domeprojection.com ProjectionTools auto-calibration to ensure long-term quality and easy maintenance. The playback of any multimedia content is carried out by means of a Watchout media server and a high-quality 5.1 audio system. This allows for flexible use of the system for all kinds of events.
Schloss Hessen in Saxony-Anhalt
After the fall of communism, the historically protected Hessen Castle and Park was developed into a tourist and cultural centre for the entire region under the auspices of the Foerderverein „Schloss Hessen“ e.V. (Castle Hessen Support Association). The historic site represents the epoch of the late Renaissance (16th/17th century) both in architectural style and in the history of the gardens of German royal courts. It is therefore of outstanding importance in the northern foothills of the Harz Mountains. Under the Guelph dukes Julius and Hedwig, Heinrich Julius and Elisabeth and the court gardener Julius Royer, the former Renaissance garden developed into one of the largest botanical collections in northern Germany with almost 1,800 cultivated plant species and thus also became a model for Germany‘s court garden culture in the 17th century. The castle and garden site of Hessen was home to music, theatre, valuable furniture, glittering hunting parties and opulent festivities.
The so-called „Stone Barn“ is one of the oldest buildings in the Castle Hessen complex and was erected at the end of the 13th century. The building was part of the lower or outer castle of the medieval Wasserburg, the predecessor of the later Renaissance castle.
